Greetings from your Steering Committee. We hope you are well and enjoying this weirdly mild winter.
The League is working on voter registration efforts in anticipation of the general election in the fall this year. In March we are collaborating with two high school seniors to sponsor two days of a registration drive at the high school. We plan to offer students paper registration and online registration on March 3 and 4 during the lunch periods.
We do need 2 volunteers each day on those dates, if any member is available for a few hours mid-day. The hours at the high school are:
Tuesday, March 3: 11:05 am–12:50 pm
Wednesday, March 4: 10:30 am — 12:15 pm
As you know, we are also working on some events that will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment giving women the vote.
The Melrose Commission on Women is working with us and they have already launched a free online course called ” Women Making History: Ten Objects, Many Stories.”
A notice is attached about this course, as well as information about the culminating discussion led by the project leader that developed the course for HarvardX, April Opoliner. The forum will be held at the UU church on West Emerson Street at 7:30 pm on February 24, 2020.
We are also working on a display at the library focused on women’s suffrage. If you would like to help with this project, please contact me by return email, or any of the members of the Steering Committee. We hope to include a display of books on the subject, some historical items, a display of political cartoons and League memorabilia from our 70 years in Melrose. We could use help getting these items in good form for display and would welcome even an hour or two of looking through League archives and organizing them. Please contact me if you would be able to help at all and we’ll see what we can arrange at your convenience.
The League is happy to have some new sponsors that are helping to support our efforts in voter registration, participation and education. They include Miter Biter Frame Co, Melrose Bank, and Sexton & Donahue. Names and links to their websites will be posted to our website shortly. Please take note of them and patronize their businesses when you are able. We appreciate their support, and would like to reciprocate as we can.
Finally, we will be having our annual Meeting with the Mayor with our new mayor, Paul Brodheur, in April. We look forward to speaking with him as he begins his term. It’s an opportunity to hear about the state of the city and to raise our questions and concerns in a small setting, and we have always appreciated his time and attention. All members and their guests are welcome to attend.
This year, the meeting will be held at 543 Lynn Fells Parkway, at 7 pm on Wednesday, April 15. Mark your calendars and ask your friends.
We’ll be in touch with further events in the spring, as well as our annual meeting in June.
