2024 League November news
Hello Members,
Please remember to vote today if you haven’t already. Exercise your right and make your voice heard.
We are working on our website and updating the information there, but meanwhile, here’s what’s happening with your League.
We had a serious discussion about the future of the League in Melrose at our Annual Meeting in July and it was decided to continue our organization with reduced meetings and activities, especially focused on our core mission of voter registration and voter information. It was noted that we need members to work on one or two activities whenever they are able, as our membership is small. Helping for an hour or two at one event, or taking over a minor task for one event, is a big contribution.
With this in mind, we were able to sponsor and staff our booth at Victorian Fair in September and we appreciate all the helpers that made that happen. Several people registered to vote with us, and many more stopped to ask questions and get information about registration and voting. Several people also asked about League membership and we are planning to invite them to a meeting as prospective members to meet them and answer their questions about membership.
At our October meeting, minutes attached, we had two new members volunteer to look into creating a FaceBook page for the League so that we can post information for our community in a place where many people seek community information. We are also considering posting on the Melrose Community payment page, and Melrose Uncensored page. After the election and the holiday season, we hope to be involved in one or two Civics programs at the High School and Middle School, and we also hope to continue our tradition of scheduling a voter registration drive at Melrose High School for students that are eligible to register next spring.
We anticipate our Annual Meeting with the Mayor will be held in April or May 2024, and notice will be sent to members when it is scheduled.
Finally, our Treasurer, Heather Doyle, has done a wonderful job keeping our books for almost 4 years now and her steady and accurate work has been most appreciated. She will be stepping down in June 2025 and so we are seeking a member that will agree to be Treasurer beginning in June 2025. The job mostly involves accepting dues payments and depositing them in our bank account, paying our bills (no more than 1 or 2 per month), reconciling the bank statements to be sure our records agree with the bank records, and preparing a Treasurer’s Report for each meeting (no more than 6-8 per year anticipated). It’s not a lot of work, but it is needed, so we hope a member will volunteer to take it on beginning next year. Please come to our next meeting in January, or contact Heather directly, if you want to ask questions about this.
Our next meeting will be January 14, at 7:30 pm via zoom. Susan Baron will send out the invitations in advance and we’ll hope to see you there.
