June 2018: At our Annual Meeting June 12, 2018, we voted to maintain our Non-Partisanship Policy as is, and approved the 2018-2019 Budget as proposed.
September 2018: Victorian Fair. As always, we maintained a booth where we registered voters, and provided literature about voting and the League.
October 2018: The League continued its tradition of sponsoring a team to walk in the annual Candlelight Vigil and Walk for Melrose Alliance Against Violence, and was among the highest fund-raising teams for donations. We also held two days of voter registration at the high school in October.
November 2018: The League offered rides to the polls on election day.
December 3, 2018: The Board of Aldermen of the City of Melrose recognized the League on the occasion of its 70th anniversary in Melrose. We were honored with a Resolution commending the League for all the work it has done, including recycling, voter registration, candidate forums, and informational panels, as well as its part in the creation of the Martin Luther King celebration, the Human Rights Commission and the Alliance against Violence.
January 2019: We participated in the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. potluck dinner and celebration. The League was a founding organization of this event in 1993.
February 2019: Susan Baron hosted a members meeting on February 10, 2019, to celebrate the League’s history and mission in Melrose after 70 years. Our state representative, Paul Brodeur, attended and presented us with a commendation from the State House. At this gathering, we also remembered and mourned the sudden and unexpected loss of one of our most active and committed members, Anna Bastian.
March 2019: The informational panel on the override question we had planned to sponsor was cancelled when one side declined to participate. We did hold two days of voter registration at the high school in March in order to provide an opportunity to register to new voters in time for the special election in May this year. This voter registration drive successfully registered approximately 24 new voters.
April 2019: The special election for the Proposition 2 1/2 override question was held on April 2, 2019 and we offered rides to the polls. On April 17, we held our annual Meeting with the Mayor, another lively and informative discussion about the City.
May 2019: The League’s Joan Moore Scholarship was not awarded this year due to the loss of Anna Bastian, but Steering Committee members Heather Doyle and Sally Stubbs volunteered to form a new committee to administer that program.
June 2019: Annual meeting is scheduled for June 12, 2019.
